Everyone seems to be in agreement that Christian Bale did a fantastic job portraying Batman in the trilogy of Bat-films directed by Christopher Nolan. Geeks the world over cried out in anguish when Bale declared he was done playing the caped crusader. The internet nearly melted down forever when it was declared that Ben Affleck would play Batman in the new DC comics shared universe films.
It has been a while since the news broke. People are adjusting. Now though, it seems like Bale is having second thoughts. He recently admitted that when Affleck was announced as the new Batman, he “stared off into space for 30 minutes”.
This kind of public regret really rankles some fans. Everyone wanted him to keep going. Why did Bale decide to stop playing Batman?
The concept with Christopher Nolan’s trilogy was that it was in a self-contained universe. Nolan wanted to tell his story from beginning to end, to let it stand as a piece all its’ own. With this mindset, one can see why Bale would be inclined to walk away. Why would he risk damaging the legacy of what is considered some of the best mainstream movies of the last 15 years?
Rumor also has it that while the Batman Bale played was a very realistic kind of character, in these new movies Batman is rubbing elbows with aliens and amazons. Batman will be in a completely different setting and thus will be a very different character. Rumor has it that this Batman will be more of a playboy, complete with a mugshot.
Everyone wanted Christian Bale as Batman, but it looks like it is not to be. For better or worse, bring on the Bat-fleck, Susan McGalla and I can’t wait!
