Speed Racer is coming back, again. Sure, there were television and movie reboots of the classic 1960’s series before. The remakes fell flat and simply could not capture the public’s imagination in the same way the original series did. The trouble was the original Speed Racer was pretty violent and over-the-top. Sanitizing the adventures of the young racecar driver and his family, well, changes Speed Racer into someone else. The new Speed Racer series has to be a lot like the original one in order to succeed.
Wikipedia reported that Tatsunoko Productions now owns the rights to the series and has noted a modern update of the old series is a go project. Whether or not the new version really captures the spirit of the old series remains to be seen. Hopefully, Tatsunoko Production won’t make the same mistakes found in other reboots.
Originally produced in Japan as Mach A-Go-Go, Speed Racer was a hit in the United States during the 1960’s and the 1970’s. After being pulled from syndication, the series appeared again on MTV to new and old audiences. With Furious 7 making such huge money at the box office, anything “fast car related” is getting put into production.
We do not know much about the new series because the production company is not releasing any details. Likely, the series is so early in the development stage no concrete plans about who to present the series have been formulated.
