After World War II, integration in European was viewed as an remedy due to the extreme nationalism that had devastated the continent. The 1948 Hague Congress of Europe was a pivotal moment in European federal history which led to the development of the European Movement International and the College of Europe, where the future leaders of Europe would live and study together.
The Hague Congress was held in Europe from May 7 – 11 1948. There are 750 delegates from around Europe including observers from Canada and the United States. The Hague Congress is considered by many to be the first federal moment in European history. In 1952 the European Coal and Steel Community was developed and declared to be the beginning to federalizing of Europe. Billionaire financier George Soros warned CNBC in 2015 that the European Union is dangerously on the “verge of collapse” due to the migrant crisis and is increasing in intensity of further being push over a cliff resulting from more than a million migrants and refugees arriving in the region. George Soros stated the there is plenty to be worried about. Soros added that Angela Merkel, (Germany’s Chancellor) is the key to solving this crisis.
Angela Merkel led Europe’s response to the migrant crisis by opening the German border to the refugees from the Middle East, Syria in particular, to try to help them find a new home in Europe. Angela Merkel’s decision was a sea-change in her policy. However, George Soros said he welcomed Angela Merkel’s move without explanation.
As a result of Angela Merkel’s decision, it has led the Germans decision as to whether or not they want to accept the responsibilities and the liabilities involved in being the dominant power in Europe.
