Impromptu taste testings are commonplace things at Bethlehem’s Freshpet Inc., but the taste testing sessions do not occur between pets and their product but rather people and their product. Freshpet Inc. is part of the fast growing and extremely prosperous “premium” pet food market and prides itself on having the only industrially produced, refrigerated dog food on the market. Freshpet Inc’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Thompson publicly stated that the way his company is making food would soon become the next level of how people are going to feed their pets. Indeed, in many ways, premium is already the new standard.
Consider how many other major and burgeoning companies are following suite such as Colgate Palmolive and their dog weight lose products or Mars Cesar Home Delights and their restaurant inspired dog food line with flavors mimicking top line, dinner favorites such as Italian lasagna and beef stroganoff. Or Purina, whom has been trending with pet owners for a long time, with their Beneful website function with allows pet owners to create their own custom diet plans for their dogs. Beneful is also rapidly expanding and have recently acquired the major pet food manufacturer Merrick Pet Care.
So what does this all mean for the average jo pet owner? Is it a good thing that there is so much competition in the premium food market? The short answer is a resounding yes! After all, with all these various different companies trying to push their own Beneful brands premium food prices will inevitably begin to fall due to competition. And with premium pet food making up now half of the entire dog food market it seems as if this market trend is a win-win for everyone!
