Raj Fernadois a serial entrepreneur who specializes in the financial markets. He founded both Scoutahead and Chopper Trading. His expertise has been sought after by the government and he has served on the State Department’s International Security Advisory Board. He has been extensively involved in philanthropic work throughout his career.
Raj Fernado was born in Denmark. His family relocated to the United States before his first birthday. He acquired dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and history from Beloit College. In 1991, he began his foray into business by volunteering at both the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange while he was still an undergraduate. This experience enabled him to be able to launch Chopper Trading in 2002.
Chopper Trading focused on fixed income and other divestitures. Mr. Fernado served as its CEO. He was directly involved in creating a sophisticated technological architecture for the firm that enabled it to competently interface with the world’s largest exchange markets, including, LSE, Nasdaq, Eurex, ICE and CME. The company employed over 250 team members around the world. Fernado leveraged this experience in 2010 when he participated in a major discussion with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission about eliminating disruptive trading practices.
In 2015, Mr. Fernado initiated a deal with DRW Trading Group that ended in their acquisition of Chopper Trading. In 2016, he founded Scoutahead. His new company specializes in talent management and workforce development. Mr. Fernado has a diverse portfolio of philanthropic work and serves on the board of various non-profits. His efforts have been instrumental in supporting the work of no-kill animal shelters, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Clinton Foundation and Wounded Warriors.
